GUGMA UG GASA a Community Service Project

GUGMA UG GASA a Community Service Project From your Secretary’s Pen By: Sec. Melanie Rosalind C. Talimio Congratulations Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro EAST URBAN for the well attended community project that kicked off the start of RY 2019-20! The project, GUGMA UG GASA, was chaired by Rtn.Grace Go under the Community Service Program of Dir. Jo Ana Llagas with members Rtn. Bebbot Chiu, PAG Bebotte Chu, and incoming Rtn. Nenette Rebolos. This was in response to the clarion call of DG BANS IBRAHIM to celebrate children’s day in July. What better way to show that RCEU took it to heart than to celebrate it on the first day of the new rotary year? So it was that last Monday, July 1, 2019, 19 ladies led by Pres. Rosalinda Caragos trooped to the Patag Child Development Center. We were greeted by Teacher Mary Annabelle Reyes-Go and the parents, mostly mothers, who were ready with their camera-phones and welcoming smiles. A little bit of history: the child development center used to be a reading center for senior citizens. During RY 2004-05 with PP Inday Uy at the helm of leadership and with the late Joe Nebrao as the District Governor, RCEU constructed the building that now houses the day care center, the first school for around 40 to 50 children aged 4-5 years old. Visiting the school again brought back memories to Rotarians who witnessed the completion of the project as either officers or new members during that time. What a fun day it was for the little ones to receive gifts, hygiene kits, and yummy food on that special day. Donated for the center’s use were a whiteboard, bookshelf, table, television, sound system and pencils which were particularly requested by Teacher Annabelle. Special thanks to Chair Grace, Dir. Joan, and Pres. Linda for the donations. Chair Grace also prepared mouth-watering carrot cupcakes and water to all the Rotarians who attended the project. The children also received beautiful orange tumblers courtesy of PDG Fe Rosales Juarez. Rtn Nenette taught the kids how to wash their hands properly and they did so with gusto. Pres. Linda gave a sentimental and inspirational talk being once a nursery school teacher and owner. PDG Bing also gave a motivational talk and congratulated the committee and thanking everyone who came. Ending the program with a bang, Chair Grace turned over the money to T. Annabelle for the feeding program. Seeing the happy faces of the little ones made it a wonderful and productive Monday morning. Thank you to all the Rotarians who came and showed their support: Pres. Linda Caragos, PDG Bing Fe Rosales Juarez, Dir. Jo Ann Llagas, Chair Grace Go, PAG Bebotte Chu, Rtn. Bebbot Chiu, Rtn. Nenette Rebolos, VP Imee van der Born, PAG Ella Yu, Treas./PP Lina Estrella Faburada (Boleen), Rtn. Vicky Lim, PP Shirley Thomas Escano, PE Daisy Tiu, Rtn. Georgie Tan, Rtn. Lina Kwong, Asst. Sec. Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro East Urban Book Drive Initiative for 2017

-Rtn. Ann Aquino In continued support to the Rotary’s goal in strengthening the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro East Urban called for donations of used books last July 1 through August 17, 2017. Collection boxes were placed at different establishments and locations around the city to serve as drop-off and pick-up centers through the duration of the project. This effort gathered about 520 books, collected from Rotarians and non-Rotarian individuals through these centers. The book drive focused on K-3rd grade level pupils and the books were distributed to selected public schools within Misamis Oriental. The first batch of books and literacy kits were donated to Pamalihi Elementary School, Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City last July 7, 2017. The next batch was distributed to Perdro Maligmat Elementary School and Alfredo A. Militante Elementary School last August 18, 2017, in collaboration with PP and Councilor Myrna Motoomull of Gingoog City and her family. The last batch will be donated to a day care center in Villanueva City, Misamis Oriental tentatively by October this year, which will be done in coordination with Rtn. and Mayor Jenny Uy. As part of the distribution activity, the ladies of the club held a story telling session with the K-level pupils, using books with features and vocabulary of two languages common in our Education System: English and Filipino. The story telling not only showed the children how to use a book but also showed them the significance of their own experience reflected in the story being read. This process of sharing and asking questions encouraged conversations and understanding about how their personal lives could relate to the lessons written in books, even as young as they are. As reading is one important skill for success, giving books to children will help them practice this skill and eventually develop love for reading. Rotary’s continued mission is “service above self,” and the Club feels this Book Drive initiative is an impactful and positive way to provide these children a meaningful and educational gift. With the leadership of RCCEU Community Service Project Chair, PP Ophelia “Ophie” dela Cerna, along with coordinators Rtn. Ann Aquino, Rtn. Kanna Motoomull-Idulsa, PP Myrna Motoomull, Club Secretary Imee Van Der Born, and the rest of the club officers under President Magdalena Cue, all forms and means of support we received from various individuals, Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike, has been valuable in the success of the...
