PASALUBONG PRODUCTS TRAINING OF ROTARY CLUB OF CDO EAST URBAN IN BJMP

The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro East Urban District 3870 recently held a skills training program for 25 inmates, also known as Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL), at the Cagayan de Oro City Jail. This event was organized under the supervision of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) on August 23, 2023, in Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City. This initiative falls under the Community and Economic Development project, a key area of focus for the Rotary Club. The project involved a food processing training program, which is viewed as a viable livelihood opportunity for the participants. The food processing training was provided by ‘1 And All Technical School,’ a TESDA-accredited institution. The training aims to equip the inmates with skills that can generate income once they are released from jail. The curriculum included the production of ‘pasalubong’ or snack items, such as polvoron, binangkal, and banana chips, which have good market potential. President Bing Dacudao, along with Director of Community Service Past President Guadalupe Chu and Chairman of the Economic and Community Development Rotarian Joy N. Co, spearheaded the project. The event was attended by 13 members of the Rotary Club, who witnessed the hands-on training and demonstrations. President Bing Dacudao inspired the participants with a talk about the significance of the training and its potential benefits. Five inmates responded by expressing their gratitude for the knowledge gained through the training. At the end of the session, starter gift packs containing an apron, hairnet, bowl, wire whisk, and ladle were distributed amongst the 25 inmates. The club also provided an initial cash outlay to cover the costs of the products. The snack items produced during the training will initially be sold to the 80 members of the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro East Urban. This strategy will help generate capital and income, enabling the inmates to start a business while still in jail. Considering Cagayan de Oro’s status as a tourist destination, the chosen products – polvoron, binangkal, and banana chips – are potentially popular ‘pasalubong’ items. The main ingredient for these products is locally sourced bananas. The project not only equips inmates with skills for future employment but also provides a foundation for a potential home-based business. This initiative aligns perfectly with the Rotary Club’s theme for the year, “Creating Hope in the world,” by instilling hope in the 25 inmates while promoting female empowerment and project sustainability. Empowered Women Empower Women: An All-Women Rotary Club’s Advocacy Against Violence

As an all-women Rotary club, we embrace our femininity – sometimes fragile, but always capable and empowered. We are loved by our families in different roles – as grandmothers, mothers, titas, wives, daughters, and sisters. But despite the love and support we receive, not all women are as fortunate as we are. This March, as we celebrated Women’s Month, we aimed to spread a little joy to fifty women who are victims of violence. Through the efforts of Rotary CDO East Urban, in partnership with RC CDO Spouses, Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro, I Will Serve Foundation, and Cagayan de Oro City Police Office, we provided 50 women with livelihood kits for manicure and pedicure, hygiene kits, 5-kilo sack rice, and boxed lunch. It is our hope and prayer that these livelihood kits will be the start of a new journey for these women and their children – one that is safe, peaceful, and full of joy. We believe that empowering these women through education and livelihood opportunities can help them break free from the cycle of violence and provide for their families in a dignified way. We understand the sensitivity of the matter and want to assure everyone that no pictures were taken of the women. Many of them have pending cases on VAWC, or Violence Against Women and Children. Still, we are immensely grateful for the trust given to us to make even a small difference in the lives of these women. This project was made possible under the Chairmanship of Marie Lynn-Benjamin Booc, Director for Community Service PP Bebotte Chu, and Director for Vocational Service PAG Rosalinda Caragos. We are proud to be part of this initiative and stand firm in our commitment to the well-being and empowerment of women. As members of Rotary District 3870, we uphold the motto “Service Above Self,” and we will continue to advocate for the rights and dignity of every woman. Join us in our cause, and together, let us empower women to empower others. #rotarydistrict3870 #RotaryServiceAboveSelf Check out more photos for this project from our...

On the day of the project, the mothers gathered to learn a new livelihood that will allow them to stay at home and watch over their children. Patterns, needles, threads, and scissors were given to the mothers. Three instructors were assigned to coach the group. This project will enable the local women to support their family income by sewing and selling items like rugs, housedresses, dusters, etc. Developing additional skills such as sewing is empowering. It will not only improve livelihood but it will also boost the women’s self-confidence and esteem to become better wives and mothers. And because the machines are handed over to a club facility that is accessible to the community, this opens an opportunity for women to interact with other members of the community for a connective growth that will help them become economically, politically, socially, emotionally and spiritually productive citizens of our country.    “For in Rotary, what is our product? It is not wooden ducks or plastic bricks. . . . It is hope, and it is life itself. For this work, only our best is good enough. I ask you all to remember this – and to do your very best to ‘Be a gift to the world’.” – RI President K.R....
